UUM ONLINE: The increasing rate of obesity amongst children between the ages of six to eleven globally is a pressing concern for many of late.

Hence, in an effort to raise awareness of practising healthy lifestyles and preventing early childhood obesity amongst primary school children, the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) School of Multimedia Technology and Communication Technology (SMMTC) in collaboration with Padang Terap District Health Centre organised a programme called 'Comel Tapi Sihat’ (Adorable but Healthy) at Sekolah Kebangsaan Perik, Kuala Nerang, Kedah recently.

Director of the programme, Nur Syafiqah Muhamad Nasir said the programme was held due to the growing concern over the increase in obesity cases amongst children in Malaysia.

"A total of 12 participants comprising SMMTC students of Group C who are pursuing the Public Relations programme became involved in the programme which was held to raise awareness and prevent early childhood obesity among primary school students," she said.

According to her, the programme involved 22 pre-school students who were divided into four groups.  These group of students later took part in three main activities namely aerobics, telematches, talk and in-group exercises (LDKs).

"The talk and LDKs are held to provide the learners with better understanding of how to eat the healthy way.

"In addition, we also invited a Health Officer, Mdm. Hamiza Rosali to give students further explanation and instill awareness on the importance of eating balanced meals," she added.

Meanwhile, the Senior Assistant of Sekolah Kebangsaan Perik, Mdm. Norhiza Ahmad said a programme such as this should be carried out continuously in order to create awareness at an early stage thus preventing diseases at an early age.

"Such a programme can also be organised as one of the programme carried out by the Parents and Community Involvement programme (PIBK) which is highly applauded by the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM).

Also present at the event were Public Relations Course Lecturer, Dr. Mohd Zuwairi Mat Saad, Headmaster of Sekolah Kebangsaan Perik, Mr. Shohaimi Abu Bakar, pre-school teacher, Mdm. Zuryawati Abdul Wahab and Assistant Teacher, Mdm. Nurul Azreen Mohd Noor.
